Every child's story deserves a happy ending....

CHILD RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES EDUCATION & PREVENTION PROJECT (CR&RP)

Creating a culture of child rights in communities, the CR&RP has designed a strategy to raise awareness of the magic of children and the importance of protecting their innocence through the training and development of parents, educators and children and, to maximize media and marketing opportunities.

The CR&RP has a prevention and education focus. Children cannot take responsibility for ensuring their safety as they are disadvantaged in terms of their age and lack of physical strength. However, awareness of their rights can assist them to seek assistance as soon as they begin to feel uncomfortable in a potentially abusive situation.

This project is also geared to engender a sense of responsibility regarding the rights of others. Research and on-the-ground experience, has revealed that there are a large number of boy children who are being sexually abused and it is estimated that he will be four times more likely to abuse others if he remains silent and unsupported through his ordeal.

This project reaches 45 000 children at a cost of R10 per head and is managed by a dedicated co-coordinator and implemented in all Childline Gauteng offices including Inner-city, Soweto, Sebokeng, Tembisa and Katorus.

Key objectives include:

  • To create awareness and sensitivity to child abuse issues in selected school communities, including teachers, learners and parents, of all forms of child abuse, with the aim of reducing abusive practices

  • To ensure sensitive services for abused children by providing training for both professional and lay persons in the field of violence against children

  • To pilot an effective Childline Buddy programme which will involve advocacy or peer support in schools in one of our Satellite offices, Katorus. This will ensure child participation
